10 Amazing Memories From A Not So Distant Past

Whatever it is about our culture, our generation or whomever/whatever you'd like to blame even if be human nature, it often seems so much easier to focus on the negative even if there are only one or two negatives in a huge whole summer's worth of positives. Life IS good! And it is important to remember that despite the deaths both tragic and expected, the bills that stress the budget, the extra 10 pounds, lack of sleep and leaking roofs the memory making, life changing, foundation building memories of HAPPY are in there! Usually its the small things...

10 Amazing Memories From A Not So Distant Past....
(aka, what I did this summer)

1. Learning to skip rocks together.
I'm not sure how I could be 33, live where I do and not ever have learned to skip a rock. Its sort of a rite of passage I should think. Maybe the skill is dying out however not for our family. Irishman spent a good long patient time teaching Lil Duck and myself to skip rocks. Not surprisingly my 4 year old did a better job of it than I. I blame the rocks and over analyzing the correct flip of the wrist for my failure. Lil Duck just went for it.

2. Family Golf outtings.
Awhile back I advised against never saying never because it would whack you in the ass in the form of a 9 Iron. Not only do I enjoy it but I now have my own set of clubs. We are thrilled to find yet another activity that the entire family can enjoy...from 4 to 40. EVERYONE has fun!

 3. Summer passes to hours of FUN!
The water park and amusement park heard the screams of all of us at some point this summer. Thing 1 needed someone to ride the roller coasters with him. He kept telling me "Don't Think. Just Do."

And Lil Duck and I got to ride the short bus. Thankfully there were no actual windows so there was no risk of embarrassing Lil Duck in giving in to my compulsion to lick the windows. Every family has a Garfield, ya know...

4. Family road trip and adventures in a rainforest complements of the Omaha Zoo.
5. A night out supporting a local animal rescue charity. A fabulous date night, with great music, sublime martinis and a fantastic cause!

6. Many, many days of cooking lunch together and picnicking inside the My Little Pony purple tent in the living room.

7.  A fun fill family connecting trip to the newly opened LEGO Land and aquarium.

8. End of summer Hawaiian Luau. This was THE party of the year! A house party complete with staff for parking help or valet parking, wrist bands at the door and you had to be on the "list". A free bar, pool, hot tub, food and DJ with dance floor and chief of police carving the pig.  Adults only, we had a blast!

9. Irish Festival...the first night was family fun. Dancing, shopping, amazing music, bubble tents, fairy wings, princess sightings, cotton candy, yummy kettle corn and bagpipes.
The second night we attended was adult night (for us)...date nights are important. We want the kids to know it is equally important for us to love each other completely as we love them. Modeling a healthy, affectionate, respectful relationship between us is a priority. AAaaand I found out I actually LIKE Jameson!

10. This was taken as we celebrated year 3 day 1...

What have you been up to???

Very nice post....except from that "4 to 40" nonsense. At 46, I still happen to have fun on family outings too, you know...I just went tubing behind a boat for the first time on Sunday. Of course I had to take my dentures out, they only went idle speed, and I shit the third set of diapers since two hours before. Funny how they make Depends look like old people bathing suits now.

I, too, have to take exception on the "4 to 40". I don't have the amazing life that you have, but I'll be 59 tomorrow, and I could tell some stories that would burn your ducky ears. LOL. Seriously, I LOVE hearing about your family, and your summer sounded just wonderful! My summer has been much quieter, but I did manage to attend my son's wedding, which was a joyful day. I have a brand new DIL and I love her as if she were my own daughter. Other than that, it's been working and studying. I do plan on a vacay some time in February or March, after I'm finished with Grad School and can save some money. OK I'll shut up now. XOXOs, my friend!

great post, and so meaningful!
One thing I've always tried to do with my kids, and now grandkids, is to build memories. With me having bipolar they've witnessed some scary stuff, but hopefully I can replace those images with better, happier memories. LOVED the pics!
